Introduction to Biomedical Science BSc (Hons)

The Biomedical Science BSc (Hons) degree at London Metropolitan University is designed to help students play a key role in identifying diseases, monitoring treatment, and undertaking research into infectious diseases and other pathologies. Biomedical science transforms our understanding of health and disease. The subjects covered during the course are similar to the pre-clinical components of a medical degree, with topics including the structure and function of biological fluids, cells, and tissues, and the relationship between bodily systems and health, disease, and the environment.


Course Structure

The study programme is designed so that core modules are delivered over two whole days per week, enabling students to juggle lectures with study and other responsibilities. The first year includes an introduction to the key principles of biomedical science and places a heavy focus on developing the necessary laboratory skills and data manipulations. In Year 2, students look at core areas such as blood science, infection, and tissue science, gaining hands-on experience in a wide range of research techniques. The third year comprises more in-depth study of the major disciplines of biomedical science, and students have the opportunity to specialize with an independent research project on a topic of their choosing.


Facilities and Staff

Students take practical classes in the Ł30 million Science Centre in London, which is equipped with 280 workstations and is one of the largest teaching laboratories in Europe. They also benefit from the guidance of knowledgeable academic staff, many of whom are active researchers, as well as a range of external speakers working in the pathology industry who keep them up to date with the latest biomedical developments and laboratory practices.


Accreditation

This course gives students the academic competencies required by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS).


Entry Requirements

In addition to the University's standard entry requirements, students should also have GCSE English and Maths at grade C or above (or equivalent). Successful applicants are normally expected to achieve one of the following:


  • At least 96 points from three A levels, which must include a minimum C grade in Biology and Chemistry or Physics or Psychology;
  • From at least two A levels (Applied subjects) in science;
  • From a BTEC National Diploma in Science with 128 points and with at least six merits in the final year, excluding common skills;
  • Equivalent qualifications will also be considered.

English Language Requirements

To study a degree at London Met, students must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the English language. If a student requires a Student visa, they may need to provide the results of a Secure English Language Test (SELT) such as Academic IELTS. This course requires students to meet the higher requirements.


Assessment

Students will be assessed through self-diagnostic testing, debates, group work, essays, and cumulative exams. Their practical skills will be assessed through coursework assignments, including those in the final project module. Data handling skills will be assessed through practical reports, problem-solving exercises, information abstracting, and reviewing exercises, poster presentations, exams, and seminar presentations.


Career Opportunities

Many graduates go on to careers in hospital and private medical laboratories as healthcare assistants, phlebotomists, and biomedical scientists. Other possible career paths include management, medical research, education, and specialized laboratory work. The skills learned are also applicable to public health, veterinary laboratories, blood banks, forensics, and pharmaceuticals development.
