Program Overview

Interior Design and Decoration - BA (Hons)

The Interior Design and Decoration BA course enables students to embrace material exploration for decorative interior environments. It draws upon the wide range of contexts within the interiors industry, covering domestic settings, retail, exhibition, hotel, leisure, and public spaces.

Why Study This Course?

The design projects featured on this interior design course investigate private, community, commercial, and sustainable interior environments. Students will consider the spatial and material relationships within surfaces, furniture, artefacts, and textiles. They will develop both graphic and applied decorative making skills to enable the testing, sampling, and representation of their ideas as a specialist interior designer.

Module Details

  • Critical & Contextual Studies 1 (Interiors): This module aims to orient and critically engage students in the history and theory of their discipline, examining its scope, conventions, and broader social and material context in culture and practice.
  • Design Principles for Interiors: Successful design outcomes are reliant on sound design development and principles. This module introduces a range of contemporary and traditional discipline-related design approaches and processes.
  • Interior Design Communication and Techniques: This module introduces the idea of communication through drawing, becoming familiar with what are commonly termed the 'industry conventions' for describing architectural details.
  • Spatial Design: This module introduces students to the 'spatial journey', a critical term used throughout the field of interior design, describing the spatial programming and planning that leads to the realization of a concept for an entire and complex space.
  • Critical & Contextual Studies 2 (Interiors): This module continues to orient and critically engage students in the history and theory of their discipline, its extent and conventions, and its broader social and material context in culture and contemporary practice.
  • Design Details: Materiality, form, and structure, color and light, surface and texture affect meaning and value in all design. This module requires critical evaluation of subtle and implicit design details.
  • Human Scale: As humans, we live in a continuous and ongoing relationship with our environment. This module aims to show how our understanding of the human body (its scale, proportions, and movement) together with awareness of sociological and physiological human behavior are key aspects to successful design.
  • Interior Design Practices and Techniques: This module develops and applies the knowledge and skills established in previous modules, preparing students for integrated design practice at Level 6.
  • Critical & Contextual Studies 3: Dissertation (Interiors): This module offers students an opportunity to understand and explore the historical, social, cultural, and economic factors that influence the development of architecture, art, and design practice.
  • Integrated Design Practice: This module provides a link between the completion of undergraduate studies and professional interior design practice, establishing students' ability to integrate and document key areas of design knowledge within the context of their major design project.
  • Major Project Realisation: Interior Design and Decoration: This module enables students to prepare for independent practice in the workplace or to progress onto higher studies, synthesizing specialist knowledge and skills and effectively communicating these.
  • Project Design and Development for Interiors: Together with the Major Project Realisation module, this module is intended to prepare interiors students for independent practice, entry into the professional workplace, or for higher study.
