Program Overview


Biochemistry B.S.

Study the molecular basis of life through the lenses of chemistry and biology. Consider the structure, function and interaction of proteins, nucleic acids and other biomolecules in biological systems.


Using techniques from biochemistry and forensic science, Amber Vandepoele '22 optimized a method to separate bacterial, plant and human cells by exploiting cell size and cellular membrane sensitivity as part of her undergraduate research project.

Curriculum

Pursue core coursework from the fields of biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics and biochemistry. Then, select from recommended electives based on your career pathway. The Department of Biology recommends distinct elective coursework for students who intend to pursue careers in biology, biochemistry or molecular biology; chemistry; health professions; or pharmaceuticals and biotechnology.


Student Learning Outcomes

  • Be able to recognize theories, concepts and principles from the major sub-fields of biology.
  • Be able to recognize theories, concepts and principles from the major sub-fields of chemistry with emphasis on developing problem-solving skills in inorganic and organic chemistry.
  • Distinguish more specific and advanced concepts in selected areas of biology and/or chemistry.
  • Be able to recognize fundamental biochemical concepts and principles and apply them to problem-solving in biochemistry.
  • Perform accurate and precise biochemical measurements and apply skills in the nature and practice of science, with emphasis on interpretation of experimental results and drawing reasonable conclusions.
  • Communicate effectively through oral and written reports.

Alpha Chi Sigma


Alpha Chi Sigma is the professional chemistry fraternity that works to advance knowledge of chemistry in the community and on campus. The group consists of both men and women with various backgrounds and majors, and they are united by the common interest in the science of chemistry.
