Overview

The Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) Department offers a Ph.D. degree program in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. The program of study is intended to prepare students for careers in research, teaching or engineering practice at an advanced level.

Program Objectives

• Students are expected to acquire a strong general background in those disciplines that collectively characterize their intended major of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.
• Students are expected to concentrate in-depth on the particular subject area of their dissertation.

Program Structure

• A faculty advisor will be assigned to each full-time student for the purpose of course selection and, if applicable, research guidance.
• Advisors may require a student to take specific courses in preparation for a special project or research.

Requirements

• All MAE graduate students are expected to be proficient in English, particularly oral communication and technical writing.
• Computer programming is also expected.
• Exceptions to program requirements may be requested by petition to the Graduate Affairs Committee.

Interdisciplinary Training Program

• MAE PhD students may be interested in the interdisciplinary training program funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF).
• The Emergent Intelligence Graduate Training Program offers fully funded research fellowship opportunities.
