Multimedia, Photography and Design Master’s Program Basics

Found within the Visual Communications Department, the M.S. in multimedia, photography and design is an immersive 18-month experience, including six months to dive deeper to finish your master’s project. We’ll provide you with a foundation in your chosen track—photography, cinematography or graphic design—while providing the opportunity to learn an expansive skillset to prepare you for the multidisciplinary industry. This flexible approach ensures you’re prepared for the dynamic demands of today’s industry.

A Focus on Visual Thinking

More than just technical skills, we’ll teach you how to think visually, crafting narratives that resonate with your audience. Our curriculum emphasizes concept development, storytelling techniques and the subtle interplay of light and composition across various media. Whether you’re capturing the decisive moment in a photograph, designing an eye-catching layout or directing a captivating film, you will gain the ability to communicate your message clearly and effectively.

As a Multimedia Photography and Design Master’s Student, You Will Choose From Three Tracks:

• Photography: Hone your skills as a photojournalist, documentary photographer or commercial photographer. Capture the essence of life through your lens, telling stories that inform, inspire and evoke emotion.
• Cinematography: Master the art of filmmaking, from lighting and camera work to editing and post-production. Bring your stories to life on the screen, captivating audiences with your cinematic vision.
• Graphic Design: Explore the world of graphic design, immersive design or motion design. Create visually stunning and user-friendly experiences for print, web, interactive and immersive media.

You’ll have the opportunity to specialize in your chosen field while gaining a well-rounded understanding of the ethical, professional and technological aspects of the industry. While prior experience is helpful, it’s not required. We’re more interested in your potential and your portfolio.

Application materials must be submitted by Jan. 15 for priority consideration. Applications continue to be reviewed on a rolling basis throughout the spring if space is available.
