Degree Overview


Objectives:

  • Prepare you to specialize in teaching pupils within their first few years of schooling.
  • Provide a fundamental understanding of the primary curriculum.
  • Gain experience in Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1.
  • Deliver the Early Years and Key Stage 1 Curricula, teaching essential knowledge to enable children to become confident, independent thinkers.
  • Develop the skills needed to prepare children for the rest of their school years and beyond.

Program Description:

  • Leads to the award of a level 7 Postgraduate Certificate in Education.
  • Full-time, one-year program.
  • Structured in three stages:
  • Stage 1: Introducing and Preparing (September to December)
  • Stage 2: Developing and Securing (January to March)
  • Stage 3: Refining and Embedding (March to June)
  • Each stage consists of University-based and School-based training.
  • University-based training introduces the whole primary curriculum and focuses on how pupils learn best.
  • School-based training provides opportunities to observe and reflect on best practice across the whole curriculum.
  • Upon successful completion and meeting the Teachers' Standards, you will be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

  • Second eight weeks of school-based training and continued subject and professional studies tuition
  • Stage 3: Refining and Embedding (March to June)
  • Final eight weeks of school-based training and a two-week transitional placement
  • Support with employment and transition into first teaching role and the Early Career Framework

Entry Requirements:


Essential Entry Requirements:

  • Undergraduate honours degree or equivalent: Please note that applicants with third-class honours degrees will be considered on an individual basis, and normally only if applicants have additional qualifications and/or significant relevant professional experience.
  • GCSE Grade 4 (or C or accepted equivalent) in English Language or English Literature, Science, and Mathematics: If you do not already have the appropriate GCSEs, or if you are unable to provide proof of your grades, please refer to the GCSE Equivalency information below.
  • Ability to read effectively and communicate clearly and accurately in spoken and written standard English.
  • Suitable personal and intellectual qualities required for teaching in primary schools.
  • Experience observing teaching in a primary school in this country (strongly recommended, but not mandatory).

Additional Entry Requirements:

  • Advanced level qualifications (or equivalent) in Primary Education (preferred).

Applicants also need to meet the following additional entry requirements set by the Department for Education (DfE) for selection:

  • Completion of a health check.
  • A satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
