The Preparation of Professional Nurse and Midwifery Advocates course is a 20 credit level 7 module. Upon successful completion, nurses/midwives will be able to practice as professional nurse/midwifery advocates.
About
This module will enable students to critically appraise the role of a Professional Nurse/Midwifery advocate and the A-Equip model in creating an environment for learning and cultural change. Students will learn to critically evaluate complex, ethical, legal, and professional issues that impact care and demonstrate strategies to support colleagues.

Entry Requirements
To apply, students must:
- Be nominated and selected by Directors/Head of Nursing/Midwifery with agreement by the Module Leader regarding suitability to study at level M
- Have completion of the HEE A-Equip e-learning module
- Have access to a relevant practice environment to meet the learning outcomes of the module
- Have the assignment of a PNA/PMA mentor with sign-off status to assess practice competencies

Structure
Content
The module syllabus includes theoretical and practical learning centered around the four elements of the A-EQUIP model:
- Monitoring, evaluation, and quality control
- Clinical supervision (restorative)
- Personal action for quality improvement
- Education and development
Learning and Teaching
The module is delivered through synchronous and asynchronous learning, amounting to 48 hours across 10 taught days. Students are expected to engage in group work and individual study, supported by a practice assessor.
Assessment
Formative assessment includes a mid-point placement learning review, peer feedback, and a reflective account. Summative assessment includes:
- Completion of practice competencies, supported by a portfolio of evidence
- A 20-minute presentation followed by 10 minutes of critical questions, focusing on an area of practice enhanced by the PNA/PMA
