The Sustainability in the Built Environment program explores the key drivers and trends affecting the built environment and how these relate to the concepts of sustainable development. The program covers various aspects, including:
- Sustainable resource use: This includes understanding the built environment as a system, climate change and energy, air quality, materials and waste, and water management.
- Sustainable urban neighbourhoods: This includes studying urban form, transport, and social and green infrastructure.
- Delivery of sustainable development: This explores how sustainable built environments contribute to the local economy, valuation of sustainable developments, future infrastructure, meeting local needs, and the Global South.

- Ability to critique the mechanisms for delivering sustainable built environments, including legislation, targets, and accreditation schemes.
- Ability to critique the current practices of built environment professionals regarding sustainable development.
- Utilization of different forms of evidence from research and practice in developing ideas.
