Midwifery Short Course MSc

Program Overview

The MSc Midwifery short course transforms registered nurses into registered midwives with an academic master's degree. Delivered through blended learning, the program equips students with the skills and knowledge to ensure positive and healthy pregnancy and birth experiences. Graduates become registered midwives with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), opening up opportunities in NHS and other midwifery settings. The program has a strong emphasis on research and prepares graduates for further study and career progression.

Program Outline

Degree Overview:

This MSc Midwifery short course for Registered Nurses is an intensive programme designed to develop your abilities as a professional midwife. It aims to equip you with the skills needed to ensure that women, birthing people and families get to enjoy a positive and healthy pregnancy and birth experience. This short course prepares registered nurses to meet the needs of maternity services and transforms graduate nurses into registered midwives with an academic masters.

Outline:

The program is delivered through a blended learning approach, with 50% of the time spent developing skills under expert supervision in a clinical setting and the other 50% spent learning theory in a University environment. The course takes 20 months to complete (85 programmed weeks, inclusive of annual leave).

Modules:

Year 1 (Compulsory Modules):

• Fundamentals of Midwifery Care: This module aims to enhance your knowledge of human anatomy, physiology and psychology, with a primary focus on the woman, the fetus and newborn.
It will encompass the philosophy of salutogenesis and its influence related to the broader concept of health and wellbeing throughout the childbearing continuum. You will explore your individual skills as a developing scholar, leader and collaborator. You will reflect on your personal development journey, focusing on self-development, resilience and self-awareness. • Midwifery Practice 1 and 2: This module aims to offer you the opportunity to develop midwifery skills, clinical knowledge, values and autonomous practice within the real world practice setting.
This will be for the benefit of women, unborn and newborn infants, partners and families. (Module code: MW4602)
• Promoting Autonomy and Positive Change: This module aims to promote excellence through consolidation of leadership, research and collegiate partnership.
You will develop knowledge of quality mechanisms including service improvement and evidence based practice to ensure safe and effective provision of midwifery care. (Module code: MW4603)
• Professional Development 3: This module aims to develop a proficient, evidence based, salutogenic practitioner of midwifery.
You will be supported to develop lifelong learning skills to prepare you for autonomous practice as a future midwife. (Module code: MW4604)
• Midwifery Practice 3: This module aims to offer you the opportunity to develop midwifery skills, clinical knowledge, values and autonomous practice within the real world practice setting.

Assessment:

The program uses various methods to assess your progress throughout the course. These are likely to include written assignments, reflective tasks, case presentations, portfolios, peer observation and clinical assessments.

Teaching:

The course is taught by qualified tutors, many of whom are qualified nurses and/or midwives. The course team has a wide range of expertise and skills within midwifery, sexual health and neonatal practice. The team keeps up-to-date with evidence-based practice and utilizes research-based evidence to inform teaching.

Careers:

Upon completion of the course, you will become a registered midwife, registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). You’ll then have the opportunity to apply to work as a midwife within the NHS or in other independent midwifery settings. You may also have opportunities to work nationally or internationally. Midwifery is a research and evidence-based career. The University encourages and supports graduates to progress onto further study, offering a dedicated MSc in Midwifery as well as opportunities for you to undertake a PhD and other research programmes.

Other:

The course involves working with vulnerable groups of individuals, including children. To ensure that the University offers places on their programmes to suitable candidates, you will be required to obtain a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service clearance (formerly termed CRB). The University will guide you through this process once you have been offered a conditional place of study.
