Program Overview
This top-up degree in Mechatronics and Intelligent Machines equips students with advanced knowledge and skills to develop mechatronic systems, including electromechanical systems, programmable logic controllers, and robotics. Through research-active staff, international opportunities, and state-of-the-art facilities, graduates are prepared for careers in engineering with enhanced responsibilities and earning potential. The program offers optional modules in Robotics and Applied Artificial Intelligence and Programmable Logic Controllers, providing students with further specialization.
Program Outline
Degree Overview:
This top-up option allows students to improve their foundation degree or HND, opening doors to roles with more responsibility and better prospects, including higher earning potential. The course equips students to work as graduate engineers through the skilled application of their knowledge of mechatronics.
Outline:
Year 1
The module also demonstrates electromechanical systems in Mechatronics systems and intelligent machines. It will give you a thorough understanding of the theory and practice of different types of maintenance that will achieve high results within the plant.
- Project: The aim of this module is to carry out and report a programme of work leading to the investigation/design of a product/system/service including the investigation, analysis, design, evaluation, test, manufacture, study of current research or development leading to the development of new knowledge and methods or applications.
- Optional Modules: You will learn how to integrate AI with machines and robotics.
- Programmable Logic Controllers: This module introduces programmable logic controller concepts, hardware architectures, and programming. PLC, DCS, HMI, SCADA, and PLC applications in Mechatronics systems.
- Advanced Engineering Portfolio: This module consists of your research project, on a topic of your choice. The topic is to be agreed between you and your and supervisor.
Teaching:
- Students will work alongside research-active staff with the possibility of continuing on to postgraduate study or PhD research.
- Students will have the chance to travel internationally to participate in conferences and contribute to research publications.
- Students will benefit from the latest high-quality equipment and facilities available through the new £35m Engineering Innovation Centre.
Careers:
- Mechatronics and Intelligent Machines is a good base for a career in a range of roles associated with system engineering, test engineers, and maintenance engineering.
Other:
- On successful completion of the degree, students can apply for progression to an MSc or world-leading research degrees within the Jost Institute for Tribotechnology.
- The Engineering Innovation Centre enables students to work on real-world projects with commercial partners in state-of-the-art facilities.
- Students can undertake an optional 12-week work placement or 38-week industry placement following completion of the taught modules.
- The University is located within one of the most intense engineering and manufacturing areas in the UK. The advanced manufacturing sector in Lancashire employs around 73,300 people, accounting for 12% of total employment.
- The School of Engineering has links with major employers in aerospace, automotive, and civil engineering including BAE Systems and JLR, as well as sector support and supply chain organisations, such as the NW Aerospace Alliance and the Northern Automotive Alliance.
