Degree Overview:

This program prepares students for a diverse career as a fire safety engineer. Fire professionals are involved in the design of fire systems, building control, and fire consultancy. The course is taught by leading academics and ex-fire professionals, providing a broad-based, vocationally relevant qualification. Students will study fire prevention, development, and containment, gaining an understanding of fire dynamics and the design of suppression systems that minimize the human, environmental, and financial impact of fire.

Year 1:

• Compulsory Modules:
• Introduction to Combustion and Fire:
This module introduces the fundamentals of combustion and fire, covering topics like combustion, fire, and explosion phenomena.
• Safety and Fire Law: This module provides an understanding of the legal system in the UK, including employment relationships, leadership, management, and teamwork skills.
• Skills for Science and Engineering: This module develops mathematical, analytical, IT, communication, and research skills.

Year 2:

• Compulsory Modules:
• Fluid Dynamics of Fires:
This module builds on the previous year's knowledge, exploring fluid flow and its application to flames, fires, and explosions.
• Fire and the Built Environment: This module examines the impact of fires on the built environment, including building construction methods, materials, smoke movement and control, law regulations, and standards.
It explores different types of fire behavior with case studies of fire impacts on buildings nationally and internationally.
• Fire Safety Management and Legislation: This module focuses on fire safety systems, means of escape, and the implementation of fire safety management systems.
It also covers the legal aspects of fire safety.
• Community Fire Safety Strategies: This module builds on the previous year's knowledge, developing skills for working effectively with partner agencies.
It introduces the concept of investigating the cause behind the cause, developing research skills to influence further risk reduction strategies.
• Fire Science Project: This module develops research and evaluation skills through a project that tests investigative and analysis skills.
This module enhances employability skills.

Assessment:

The assessment methods include examinations and coursework. Coursework may include group projects, modeling exercises, time-controlled assignments, short answer questions, essays, practical reports or tests, problem-solving exercises, critical reviews, or presentations.

Teaching:

Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, workshops, laboratory work, project work, case studies, and site visits. The mix of teaching methods is designed to motivate and challenge students, considering different learning styles to maximize their potential. Students learn through a variety of methods, including innovative information and communication technologies and practical case studies based on research outcomes achieved by the School staff.

• The course is accredited by the Energy Institute (EI) on behalf of the Engineering Council and recognized by the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) as a Recognised Educational Programme (with academic exemption) for Member Grade (MIFireE).
• Students can take a one-year industrial placement during their studies to increase their employability.
Most placements are UK-based, but opportunities exist for global placements.
