The Certificate in Neonatal Community Care supports practitioners in giving care that is not only family-focused but holistic to the needs of the individual infant and family.
Course Overview
The content will include:
- Government issues and policy concerns.
- Examination of the legal, ethical and cultural implications of nursing the neonate in the home.
- Child protection issues.
- Discharge planning, transition from unit to home.
- Nutritional management of the neonate.
- Supporting the family of an infant on home oxygen.
- Supporting the family of a terminally ill infant or through bereavement.
- Facilitation and management of change.

Learning Environment
The course will emphasise the creation of a reflective environment that serves as a safe space within which to challenge practice. Formal lectures will provide a focus and stimulus for other forms of learning e.g. seminars, tutorials and discussion. Independent study and personal reflection forms an important and integral element of this module serving to link theory and practice.
You will be assessed theoretically; this involves the completion of a written assignment.
This certificate is studied on a part-time basis and delivered over a trimester. It is studied at Level 6 and equates to 20 credits at this level of study.
