Program Overview


Course Overview

The module aims to provide students with opportunities to develop and advance their knowledge of practice and policy in safeguarding children and young people. It will contribute to the continuing professional development (CPD) of practitioners, academics, and researchers in the field of safeguarding children and young people.


Course Description

Child Welfare services are in a period of on-going, rapid change. Since the focus of this module is on contemporary practice, the specific content varies year on year to reflect these changes. Consequently, the content below is indicative rather than definitive or exhaustive:


  • Contemporary context
  • Policy, guidance, and practice in relation to assessment of need and risk
  • Professional decision making – evidence from research
  • Lessons from serious case reviews and research
  • Theoretical approaches to safeguarding
  • Outcomes – what are good outcomes for children, what is the evidence base, and how can they be assured?
  • Evidence base for effective inter-professional child welfare practice in safeguarding children
  • Developing strategies for effective Inter-professional/multidisciplinary working
  • Staff support and professional development in safeguarding work

Entry Requirements

This module is aimed at those who wish to develop their knowledge and practice in safeguarding children and young people.


All candidates need to ensure that they have a relevant undergraduate degree at 2:2 or above, or evidence of their ability to study at postgraduate level.

Progression Pathways

Under the School’s Centre for CPD portfolio, this module can be completed as standalone or towards one of the following courses:


  • Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Development and Practice
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Specialist Practice with Adults
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Specialist Child Care Practice
  • Masters in Professional Development and Practice

This module is also a core module (mandatory module) on the PGCert Safeguarding Children.


Learning Environment

This course is part-time: weekly 3 hour lecture over 9 weeks, plus self-directed study time required to complete assessment.
