Enhancing Practice: Children & Young People's Mental Health
Course Overview
This double module is aimed at practitioners who wish to develop their knowledge and skills in working with children, young people and their families with mental health problems. The module can be studied on its own or as an Advanced Certificate for continuing professional development purposes. A range of teaching and learning activities are utilised within the course, with the student being placed at the centre of a co-operative learning process to help in the development of skills in the critical analysis and evaluation of approaches to child and adolescent mental health and social care.

Students must be working in a clinical area relevant to the module content.

- 12 days in the classroom over 12 weeks, 40 credits at Level 6

- Production of a health promotion leaflet and a 3,000 word case study

Course Description
Some of the issues to be covered during the course are:
- Resilience and risk
- Assessment and assessment tools
- Depression and self-injury
- Children’s rights and the mental health act
- Autistic spectrum disorders learning disabilities
- Introduction to solution focused brief therapy and multidisciplinary and multi-agency working
Students are required to be working within a relevant health/social care environment with children, young people and their families.
