Learning and assessment

Modules comprise a mixture of lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical sessions and independent study. Most modules are lecture-based but computing facilities are made available when necessary for you to learn how to use AutoCAD and Microsoft Project.

Independent study is an important aspect of your degree course. The exact combination of study time will be detailed within your module descriptors, and will depend on your options.

You’ll be able to undertake a week-long surveying workshop in the first year/second year if on a foundation year.

Most modules are assessed by examinations/coursework with the final mark being the average of the two. Exceptions are modules best assessed by coursework only. These could be group projects, modelling exercises or time-controlled assignments.

The professional knowledge and expertise of the staff delivering the programme is reflected in the coursework, which is often based upon real-life projects and case studies. You’ll use a problem-solving approach to achieve specific learning outcomes.

Staff have active research interests in facilities management, workplace wellbeing and productivity, construction, project management, building information modelling, surveying, sustainability and construction law. These interests are incorporated into the delivery of the programme.
