About the Course

We believe that language learning is for everyone, and anyone should be able to access it in a way that suits them. That is why the School has opened its part-time language courses to all; students, staff and members of the public. Classes are available in various formats (semester or year-long) and levels. All languages are available at beginners level with the more popular languages available at higher levels.

The part-time language programme is currently available in eight different languages. All languages are available at beginners’ level (except English) with the more popular languages available at higher levels.

Format

All languages are offered as year-long courses. The year-long courses consist of a two-hour language class per week for the duration of 24 weeks, including assessment. The year-long courses start on w/c 30 September 2024.


Introduction to British Sign Language is also offered as semester-long module (12 weeks) and consists of four hours of class per week. The start date for semester one modules is w/c 30 September 2024 and for semester two modules is w/c 20 January 2025.


Classes are expected to be delivered face-to-face in a classroom setting on the Preston Campus.


Registration

Year-long and semester-one classes start the week commencing 30 September 2024.


The semester two classes start the week commencing 20 January 2025.


Electives

UCLan students who would like to take any of the modules as an elective, please contact your course administration team to find out if you are eligible.


Certificates

The deadline for enrolment for the year-long courses is 4 October 2024 and for the semester-two courses is 24 January 2025.


Members of the public must provide photographic identification (driving licence, passport, etc.) upon request.


Members of staff must provide their staff card upon request.


Fees

Elective

If you are an undergraduate studying a language as an elective, this is counted as part of your course. Therefore, there is no additional payment.


Certificate

The certificate option is available to UCLan students, UCLan staff and members of the public.


Students taking a certificate

This is the option for postgraduate or undergraduate students with a full profile or without the option to choose an elective. The certificate is taken in addition to your main programme of study and the discounted fee is £259.


Members of the public

The full fee for all levels is £495. UCLan Alumni and those in receipt of the state pension are entitled to a discount on the full fee. The discounted fee for is £259.


UCLan Staff

UCLan staff members are entitled to a discount on the full fee. The discounted fee for is £259.


Payment of Fees

Payment must be made upon registration. Before completing your enrolment, please be sure that you do wish to pursue the course, as the following fees will apply should you withdraw from the course:


Year-long Courses

  • Withdrawal within 4 weeks of course start date: refund applies
  • Withdrawal after 4 weeks of course start date: no refund applies

Semester-long Courses

  • Withdrawal within 2 weeks of course start date: refund applies
  • Withdrawal after 2 weeks of course start date: no refund applies

Conversation Classes

Our conversation classes offer a unique opportunity for all language students to practice their speaking skills and have fun via interactive, real-life based scenarios. They take place weekly during term-time and are facilitated by native-speaking language assistants. They are ideal for immersing into a different culture and making new friends along the way. The classes will resume in autumn 2024.


Introduction to British Sign Language

Understanding sign language isn't just a skill, but a way to convey your thoughts to your friends and loved ones who are Deaf or hard of hearing. The Introduction to BSL certificate is designed to enable you to acquire a basic ability to communicate with Deaf people using British Sign Language (BSL) in everyday situations.


Support and Learning Resources

Right at the heart of the Preston Campus the Worldwise Centre offers a vast range of opportunities to learn another language, improve your knowledge about world cultures and master your cross-cultural skills. The Centre’s facilities, resources and events are available to all students, staff and the general public. The Centre provides a comfortable place to meet and make friends with speakers of different languages in a welcoming environment.
