Overview

This Advanced Certificate Mentoring in Dental Practice is designed for dental professionals who wish to mentor others. The course will equip you to support others to fulfill the requirements of professional practice in dental care.

What You’ll Do

• You’ll look at best practices in mentorship, reviewing theories and evidence, as well as roles and boundaries in the mentoring relationship.
• Identify ways of improving performance and wellbeing and sources of support for mentors and mentees.
• You'll need to identify a mentee prior to beginning the course who you'll be able to work with in practice.
• Throughout the course, you'll evaluate and support the progress of mentees using a range of mentoring strategies appropriate to the professional practice.

Compulsory Modules

  • Module code: DX4901
  • The module aims to equip you as a member of a dental team with the skills to fulfill the role of mentor with colleagues who require support to meet the requirements of professional practice in Dental care.

Entry Requirements

• Applicants must be experienced dentists/dental care professionals currently registered with the General Dental Council with the ability to benefit from study at Level 7 (providing evidence on the application form of former study at level 6 or above, or considerable experience of relevant professional development activities) and willing to undertake the role of mentor in dental practice.
• Evidence of undertaking formal preparation in the development of others e.g. Advanced Certificate Facilitation of Learning in Healthcare Practice, PGCE, Cert Ed, Preparing to teach in the Lifelong learning sector will normally be required.
• For candidates without a teaching qualification, attendance at an additional one-day “Supporting Learning” workshop will be required during the course.

Learning and Assessment

• You’ll learn through online lectures, small academic discussion groups, presentations, and practice-based mentoring activities. The course is taught by subject specialists from the University and selected guest speakers.
• A reflective case-based report gives you the chance to critically examine the challenges of mentoring. You’ll use a specific case study and demonstrate how you’d address these challenges. You'll also be expected to present an overview of a specific element of your mentoring journey alongside a professional discussion of your mentoring journey.
