Course Overview
The module aims to equip supervisors in social care with a systematic understanding of knowledge, and a critical awareness of the challenges in the practice of supervision. It will provide new insights, informed by current models of supervision and research at the forefront of professional practice. The module will enable students to gain a critical understanding of knowledge in their area of practice and to practise the skills required to provide effective supervision within a complex and changing social care environment.

- Establishing a clear understanding, rationale and framework for supervision
- The impact of supervision on practice and outcomes for service users and carers
- The role of emotional intelligence in supervision
- Theories of adult learning, learning styles and experiential learning
- Skills, values and knowledge of working with diverse communities and challenging oppressive practice
- Skills in leadership
Module Details
- 20 Credit Module at Level 7
- On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:
- Demonstrate a critical awareness and understanding of the principles and purposes of supervision
- Critically analyse the link between supervision, practice and outcomes for vulnerable adults, children and young people
- Critically evaluate the application of adult experiential learning
- Critically examine the role of anxiety and its impact on a worker’s judgement and analysis of information
- Critically examine the complex issues in supervision, systematically and creatively.
Entry Requirements
This module is aimed at those supervising social workers or social care staff and are keen to develop their skills and knowledge in this critical area of professional practice.
- All candidates need to ensure that they have a relevant undergraduate degree at 2:2 or above or evidence of their ability to study at postgraduate level.

Progression Pathways
Under the School's Centre for CPD portfolio, this module can be completed as standalone or towards one of the following courses:

- Masters in Professional Development and Practice
Learning Environment
Presentation and reflective assignment.
- The course is 3 months, comprising 6 teaching days plus self-directed study time.
