Overview
The Trauma and Emergency Medical Management in Sport (TEMMiS) short course is designed to develop the decision-making and practical skills needed to deal with sports injuries and illness. The course is one of a group of courses that support your progression towards being a leader in Sports Medicine.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion, you will be able to:
- Demonstrate decision-making and practical skills needed to deal with sports-related injuries.
- Apply a range of treatment techniques such as immobilising, player removal, and transport.
Course Content
The course includes:
- Legal issues, risk assessment, accident reporting
- Current standards of first aid/resuscitation, basic life support, and advanced life support
- Primary and Secondary survey
- Airway management (including airway adjuncts and surgical airways)
- Breathing and circulation assessment and management
- Spinal injuries
- Musculoskeletal injuries
- Maxillofacial injuries including concussion
- Neurological assessment (AVPU/GCS)
- Emergency action planning
- Appropriate management of common injuries and illness
- Safe removal of the injured athlete from the field of play

Future Careers
This course enhances your skills in assessment, management, and rehabilitation of sports injuries. You'll also develop new skills in treating common medical conditions. The course is ideal for medical professionals working in sport or aspire to at any level.
Entry Requirements
- Applicants should hold at least a 2:2 degree in a related subject
- Applicants must hold a Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery qualification or relevant professional qualification in a related field such as physiotherapy or sports therapy
- Applications from other related professions will be considered on an individual basis
- Be actively engaged in or access clinical experience in a Sports and Exercise Medicine practice in order to support learning within the programme
- IELTS: Score of at least 6.5 or equivalent
- A satisfactory criminal records declaration (DBS/Disclosure Scotland) is required for this course

Learning and Assessment
This practical advanced emergency care on the field course enables students to enhance their skills. Lectures and practical sessions develop the foundational theory and application of a range of skills. These skills allow you to function as an advanced pitch-side sports first aider.
Advanced discussions will improve understanding of the role of a first aider. You'll develop risk assessments, prepare emergency action plans, and deliver pitch-side care and removal from play strategies. The role of the MDT will also be highlighted.
Assessment will include a pass/fail practical. This will ensure you demonstrate the clinical skills required to meet the core competencies of the TEMMiS module.
A written exam will be used to review the understanding of the critical skills required to deliver pitch-side care and referral.
Pathway Opportunities
The module offers 20 credits towards the MSc/PGDip/Cert in Sports Medicine.
