About the course

This course is delivered at University Centre Myerscough and awarded by the University of Central Lancashire.


The motorsport industry is centred on the United Kingdom and its employers require highly capable, motivated staff who can contribute to the success of their teams in all areas. A degree in Motorsport Technology provides the ideal platform for those who wish to progress within the industry.


This course is designed as a progression route for students who have completed a Foundation Degree or Higher National Diploma in a relevant subject area. It focuses on developing an analytical approach to the Motorsport industry with a strong focus on research and development, preparing students to work in the industry at an appropriate professional level. The knowledge provided by this course provides a basis for progression to graduate schemes in the top teams in the sport, or to work directly in the industry in technical roles.

Course modules

Year 1

  • Contemporary Issues in Motorsport This module will enable students to critically evaluate a range of current issues that are likely to have a major influence on the structure and development of the industry over the next few years.
  • Professional Practice and Quality Standards The motorsport industry is a highly disciplined professional environment. This module develops the skills and practices for working in the industry and on events. The student will gain an understanding of professionalism and the quality standards expected by the industry for best practice. This module aims to provide a quantitative value in the role of Quality Assurance and TQM (Total Quality Management) as a tool to improve product quality and management responsibilities within an organisation or business.
  • Advanced Powertrain and Chassis This module examines in detail powertrain and chassis technology. Initial sessions will be used to identify the current and potential issues that will affect motorsport powertrains and chassis in the future. Students will investigate technologies that can be used to resolve these issues and will then critically evaluate them. They will then look into component design and attempt to modify designs for specific applications.
  • Future Automotive Technology This module aims to explore future technology developments in motorsport and how technology has been used to enhance performance. Considerations towards future technologies will be made and how this will impact the industry. Included in this module will be whole-vehicle examples and the development of the technology implemented.
  • Dissertation (Double Module) The project will be sourced from industry to improve overall efficiency and function of a machine, competition car or aspect of business. It is intended that each individual uses this project as the vehicle for acquiring knowledge and experience under the philosophy of "Action Learning" thereby facing and addressing real challenges.

Entry requirements & additional information

Entry requirements

  • Foundation Degree or HND in a related subject or 2 years (one at Level 4 and the other at Level 5) of Honours Degree work in a related discipline achieved at 'pass' standard or above.
  • Applicants with alternative equivalent qualifications will also be considered positively.
  • Applicants must also produce evidence of successfully completing a research-based module at level 5.
  • Applicants for whom English is a second language must be able to demonstrate proof of International English Language Testing System (IELTS) at level 6.0 (with no component score lower than 5.5) or equivalent.
  • All offers may be subject to successful interview.

Learning and assessment

  • Learning Environment: Learning activities on the course are diverse, including lectures, seminars, tutorials, and workshops.
  • Additional Information: Modules may include guest speakers of standing within the industry. Off-site visits to areas of environmental significance may also be undertaken.

Progression

On successful completion of the course, students may apply for Postgraduate studies or employment.


Careers

Students gaining the degree may seek employment in the motorsports industry and opportunities exist in all sections of the sport. Positions such as Technician, Team Manager, Workshop Manager, Team Co-ordinator, and sales are all possible career paths. It is expected that graduates of this course will find it easier to progress through their career and reach a higher level.


Professional accreditations

Students will be encouraged to form links with national motorsport organisations such as the Motorsport Industry Association and Motorsport UK (MSUK), to join the MSUK accredited Myerscough College Motor Club, to register and undertake online marshal training and apply for the free MSUK RS Clubman competition licence.


Special requirements

Steel toe capped footwear and flameproof overalls may be required if and research is undertaken in the workshop.
