Advanced Stroke Practice is a post-registration module open to all registered health and social care professionals. It aims to develop analytical and clinical skills across the whole stroke pathway.

The module provides you with specialist stroke education on theory and research underpinning current stroke practice. A multidisciplinary perspective is maintained throughout the module. The module will develop your critical skills to evaluate evidence and policy guiding practice.
On completion of the course, students will be able to:
- Evaluate the development of patient assessment and management strategies in stroke care
- Evaluate theoretical perspectives that underpin the delivery and organisation of stroke services
- Evaluate and promote the role of patients and families in stroke service planning, delivery and in stroke research.
- Apply principles of research design and methodology to research questions within stroke research.
The curriculum model places a strong emphasis on the role of students as active participants in the learning process. This will enable you to develop skills in critical thinking and the application of knowledge. The course promotes independent learning, involving a range of teaching including lectures, workshops, and peer learning.

This module will be relevant for students who have completed the Principles of Stroke Module, or are enrolled on the MSc Advanced Clinical Practice.
All students require experience in stroke care and are a registered health or social care professional.
Learning environment and assessment
The course will run for four hours per week, usually every two weeks, over 12 weeks.
We will use a variety of learning approaches: lectures, discussion groups, student-led presentations, case histories and reflection in practice. As part of the course you will be expected to to engage in self-directed study and preparatory work for specific sessions.
This module will be assessed by the production of a 3000 word reflective report that reconstructs the evidence-base for an aspect of stroke care relevant to the student’s field of work, and a poster presentation.
