Course Overview

This module provides an interesting introduction to the care of the child with cancer. The assignment allows the student to explore their particular areas of interest related to the child with cancer. Students will discuss the development of childhood cancer, the treatment and the impact on the child and family and supportive care that can be offered.


Taught by experienced lecturers in the field of cancer care, with significant experience of working in oncology.

Learning Outcomes and Aims

The aim of the module is for you to gain in-depth insight into the physical, psychological and social impact of a diagnosis of cancer for the child and family in order to enhance the supportive care you offer.


On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:


  • Critically discuss the biological basis and aetiology to the development of common childhood cancers
  • Critically analyse the rationale for the different treatment approaches to common childhood cancers and their influences on the supportive care required by the child and family
  • Evaluate the physical, psychological and social impact of a diagnosis and treatment of cancer on the child and family
  • Debate the approaches/strategies that may be used to offer effective and appropriate support to the child and family during their experience of cancer.
