Geography and the Environment Undergraduate Programs

Understanding the connection between how and where people live requires knowledge of the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. We offer many different options for undergraduate students who want to make a world that is more environmentally sustainable and socially just.

Bachelor of Arts in Geography

As a geography major, you won’t just study the world around you—you will get out and experience it through immersive coursework, fieldwork, and research. You will form a new perspective on the dynamic relationships between people and places, and will have the knowledge to analyze issues and advocate for sustainable change.

Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Environment, Sustainability, and Policy

In the environmental, sustainability, and policy (ESP) undergraduate degree program, you will explore and think critically about the political, cultural, and economic factors that affect environmental policy around the world. This double major program (a base major is required before adding ESP) will develop your ability to understand these problems from multiple perspectives, to think about their science and policy implications, and to find solutions that promote sustainability.

Minor in Geography

Coursework for a geography minor spans the social and natural sciences. Combine majors and minors in other fields to prepare for a fulfilling career or advanced studies in environmental analysis and resource management, urban and regional development, international relations, conflict resolution, public service, and more. To complete a minor in geography, students must complete 18 credits in geography courses, of which a minimum of 12 credits must be upper division (i.e., 300-level or above).

Minor in Environment and Society

The environment and society (E&S) minor examines the social dimensions of environmental issues and sustainability, giving you a deep understanding of the political, cultural, and economic factors that shape the relationship between society and the natural environment. The minor requires the completion of 18 credits including an introduction to environmental studies and an introduction to physical geography. The remaining courses must be selected from a list of primarily upper-division environmentally oriented courses identified by the E&S director and steering committee. At least two elective courses completed for this minor must come from departments other than geography and the environment.
