Program Overview

MSc Building Information Modelling (BIM) in Design Construction and Operations

The MSc Building Information Modelling (BIM) in Design Construction and Operations is a postgraduate program that explores all aspects of a building's entire lifecycle, from design to demolition. This course offers students the chance to cover new ground and be at the forefront of this exciting, emerging discipline using a combination of theory and real-life practice.

About

This program is unique in its holistic approach to everything from design and construction to maintenance, operation, and sustainability. Students will learn from industry and research experts using state-of-the-art BIM software and benefit from regular talks from BIM experts and close links to the industry and BIM Regional Hub: South West.

Accreditations and Partnerships

The course is accredited by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB). A RICS-accredited course assures employers that students hold a high-quality, industry-relevant qualification, and it is also the first step to becoming a chartered surveyor.

Entry Requirements

  • We normally require an honours degree of 2.2 or above.
  • If you do not meet the above grade requirements but have at least 12 months relevant professional experience and/or equivalent qualifications, we will consider you on an individual basis.
  • Applicants may be required to attend an interview.
  • English language support is available for students who meet the academic requirements but require additional support to take their language skills to the required level.
  • International and EU applicants are required to have a minimum overall IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 with 5.5 in each component.

Learning and Teaching

The course uses a variety of teaching methods, including lectures, seminars, workshops, and tutorials. Students are expected to learn both in groups and independently, as well as using online resources.

Study Time

The program is taught through five formal 'contact blocks' throughout the year, with each block one day long. Between blocks, students are expected to undertake reading and other tasks to reinforce their understanding of the issues and complete their coursework and practicals.

Assessment

The program uses a range of assessment methods, but students' knowledge is tested mainly through BIM 'real-life' projects, with a focus on the various aspects of the built environment lifecycle, including design, construction, operation, and maintenance.
