PGCE iQTS Secondary English (11-16)

The PGCE iQTS Secondary English (11-16) is a postgraduate program designed to develop skills in teaching English to eleven- to sixteen-year-olds in international schools.

This program is offered by the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) and is designed to produce committed, collaborative, adaptable, and solution-focused teachers through high-quality training in international spaces. The program focuses on putting learners at the heart of teaching, celebrating difference to help transform the lives of children and young people in the global society.


Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this program, applicants must have:


  • GCSE grade C/4 or above in Mathematics, or equivalent
  • An undergraduate honours degree (2:2 or above) or a recognized equivalent qualification in any subject
  • Robust prior knowledge, skills, and understanding of English appropriate to teaching ages 11-16
  • A personal statement explaining why they want to do the course and what they hope to achieve (minimum 250 words)
  • A UK DBS, local/overseas criminal record/police checks, or an International Child Protection Certificate (ICPC)
  • Two satisfactory references received directly from the referees, relating to working with children
  • Completion of a Suitability Declaration with an embedded Health Check for Fitness to Teach

English Language Requirement

International and EU applicants are required to have a minimum overall IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5, with at least 6.0 in each component (or approved equivalent).


Structure

The program involves completing at least 120 days in teaching practice during the course and gaining some experience of an alternative school. The modules studied include:

Fees

The full-time course fees are:


  • Home Award Fee: Ł7,850
  • International Award Fee: Ł7,850 Council of British International Schools (COBIS) schools will receive a 5% discount (full-time fees only). Extra costs may be incurred in addition to the tuition fee for study items such as set texts, computer devices, and internet services/access.

The program includes a significant amount of teaching practice, with at least 120 days of practical teaching experience over 36 weeks. Students will benefit from high-quality, evidence-based training, studying online and putting their learning into practice in the classroom. Careers

The iQTS (PGCE) Secondary English (11-16) will enhance career prospects in teaching English in international secondary schools. On successful completion, the Department for Education (DfE) in England will automatically award Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), qualifying students to teach in schools in England. The course includes 60 academic credits assessed at master's level, which can be used to contribute towards a master's degree.
