Course Overview

The Professional/ Short Course Knowledge Organisation is a 12-week course that delivers theoretical concepts of knowledge and information organisation, as well as practical training on relevant software and technical skills. This 30-credit Masters level module is offered alongside other CILIP-accredited modules.

About the Course

Knowledge organisation forms the foundation of efficient data, information, and knowledge management. Organisations of all forms and sizes require good knowledge organisation practices, so to structure, categorise, and retrieve knowledge, enhancing learning and decision-making and supporting innovation.

Upon successful completion of this module, you will:

• Develop and communicate foundational concepts of knowledge management.
• Apply knowledge management principles, procedures, and tools to practical scenarios.
• Critically assess the role and utility of ICT systems on knowledge management processes.

Entry Requirements

Participants are expected to have a first degree at 2.2 level or above (or equivalent), or alternatively have six-months of relevant industrial experience.

If you are a non-UK student you will need to show your passport on entry to the UK. If English is not your country's first language, you will be required to provide evidence to show you meet the UK Border Agency and the University's minimum English Language requirements.

This module can be taken as a standalone module, or used to build up credit towards a named postgraduate qualification.

Content

This module will cover the following topic areas:

• Foundations of Knowledge Organisation
  • Theories of information and communication
  • Digital information representation
  • Database design and data integration
  • Markup language standards, such as HTML and XML
• Access and Retrieval of Knowledge
  • Metadata schemes and application profiles
  • Taxonomies, ontologies and classification
  • Information retrieval and search evaluation
  • Content management and knowledge visualisation, GLAM and Enterprise
  • Digital preservation
• Knowledge Use
  • Semantic web technologies, such as RDF, SPARQL, and Linked Open Data
  • Tagging and folksonomy
  • Use of AI in knowledge organisations

Learning and Teaching

Scheduled learning (48 hours) will include lectures, seminars, practical classes and workshops over a 12 week period. Independent learning (250 hours) includes hours engaged with essential reading, assignment preparation and completion.

Assessment

The module will be assessed by means of a portfolio of outputs created by students working alone or in groups throughout the term. Portfolio entries will typically be accompanied by short reflective or evaluative commentaries of 2-500 words. Between 5 and 10 portfolio entries will be required depending on the tasks selected.
