Program Overview


MSc Engineering Management

The MSc Engineering Management is a professional interdisciplinary course that provides students with the essential capabilities and industry-relevant skills to excel as future leaders in an increasingly globally connected environment.


About

This course is designed to help students with high potential accelerate their career towards senior management in the engineering and technology sectors. The content is research-informed, industry-focused, with strong leadership development. Students will have the opportunity to tailor the course towards their own area or areas of interest, whether that is technical strengthening in either engineering or advanced manufacturing, or business widening in change management.


Industry Relevant Experience

The course offers a unique opportunity for students to equip themselves with the essential capabilities and industry-relevant skills to excel as future leaders in an increasingly globally connected environment. The master's is taught by the Department of Engineering, Design and Mathematics and the Bristol Business School, providing a unique opportunity to work in an interdisciplinary environment, and additionally work with leading academics and externally-recognised industry speakers.


Exceptional Interdisciplinary Experience

The focus is on management within technology and engineering organisations, with a strong emphasis on the modern strategic challenges facing multinationals and SMEs, and the part that technology and engineering businesses have to play in addressing them.


Entry Requirements

We normally require a honours degree at 2:2 or above in an engineering or business-related discipline. If you do not meet the above grade requirements but have at least 12 months relevant professional experience and/or equivalent qualifications, we will consider you on an individual basis.


Personal Statement

You are required to complete a personal statement for this course. Please read the personal statement guidance carefully and make sure that you answer the questions on the postgraduate application form within the personal statement tabs, keeping to the advised word count.


English Language Requirement

International and EU applicants are required to have a minimum overall IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 with 5.5 in each component (or approved equivalent).

You'll study the following compulsory modules:


  • Project Management in Practice
  • Process Design and Simulation
  • Dissertation (Masters)
  • Finance for Non-Financial Managers
  • Strategic Analysis of Technical Operations
  • Sustainable Engineering for Global Challenges Plus, one optional module from:
    • Logistics and Supply Chain Management
    • Principles of Lean Engineering

Learning and Teaching

The curriculum is delivered through a range of teaching and learning activities, encompassing lectures, seminars, small group work, and workshops. We place an emphasis on project-themed, practice-based learning, with extensive use of real-life case studies from industry, and use workshops to instigate debate and develop critical thinking skills.


Study Time

For each 15 credit module, it is recommended you allocate 150 hours of time - made up of 35 hours of tutor-led contact and 115 hours of independent learning, including assimilation and development of knowledge, and preparing coursework.


Assessment

A range of assessments are used across the modules to enhance and develop your learning. There will be an emphasis, in particular, on developing and assessing your professional skills, through essays, reports, oral presentations, and your research dissertation.
