Introduction to Chinese Proficiency Tests

Lancaster University Confucius Institute is an official UK test centre for HSK, HSKK, and YCT Chinese Proficiency tests. These tests are internationally recognised qualifications for non-native speakers of Chinese and are required for most opportunities to study or work in China.

Test Types and Levels

The following tests are offered:

• HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) written test
• HSKK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) oral test
• YCT (Youth Chinese Test) for school-aged learners

HSK Test Levels

The HSK test is available in six levels:

• HSK Level 1
• HSK Level 2
• HSK Level 3
• HSK Level 4
• HSK Level 5
• HSK Level 6

HSKK Test Levels

The HSKK test is available in three levels:

• HSKK Elementary
• HSKK Intermediate
• HSKK Advanced

YCT Test Levels

The YCT test is available in four levels:

• YCT Level 1
• YCT Level 2
• YCT Level 3
• YCT Level 4
• YCT Oral Beginner
• YCT Oral Intermediate

Test Fees

The test fees for each level are as follows:

• HSK Level 1: Ł10
• HSK Level 2: Ł20
• HSK Level 3: Ł30
• HSK Level 4: Ł40
• HSK Level 5: Ł50
• HSK Level 6: Ł60
• HSKK Elementary: Ł15
• HSKK Intermediate: Ł25
• HSKK Advanced: Ł35
• YCT Level 1: Ł5
• YCT Level 2: Ł10
• YCT Level 3: Ł20

Test Dates and Registration

The test dates for 2026 are:

• Saturday, 24 January 2026 (HSK and HSKK)
• Saturday, 21 March 2026 (YCT)
• Sunday, 22 March 2026 (HSK and HSKK)
• Saturday, 16 May 2026 (HSK and HSKK)
• Sunday, 24 May 2026 (YCT)
• Sunday, 28 June 2026 (HSK and HSKK)
• Saturday, 17 October 2026 (HSK and HSKK)
• Sunday, 13 December 2026 (HSK and HSKK)

Preparation Classes

Free preparation classes are available for HSK and YCT tests. The classes are scheduled as follows:

• HSK drop-in: Tuesdays, 12:00-13:00
• HSK Level 1 preparation class: Mondays, 11:00-11:45
• HSK Level 2 preparation class (online): Thursdays, 14:00-15:00
• HSK Level 3 preparation class (online): Wednesdays, 13:00-14:00
• HSK Level 4 preparation class (online): Tuesdays, 17:00-18:00
• HSK Level 5 preparation class (online): Mondays, 17:00-18:00
• YCT preparation class (online): Thursdays, 16:30-17:15

Student Discount

Students who are studying Chinese as part of their degree are eligible for a discount on HSK and HSKK tests. The discounted price is Ł1. To be eligible, students must:

• Be a current student at Lancaster University
• Be studying Chinese as part of their degree
• Not have attempted the specific HSK or HSKK test at Lancaster University before
