Introduction to Sociology and Criminology (Study Abroad) BA Hons

The Sociology and Criminology (Study Abroad) BA Hons program at Lancaster University is a comprehensive and interdisciplinary course that explores the complex relationships between society, crime, and the criminal justice system. Program Overview

• The program is a four-year full-time course that includes a study abroad year in the third year.
• Students will spend two years at Lancaster University before going overseas to study at one of the university's international partner universities.

Entry Requirements

• A levels: BBB
• Access to HE Diploma: 24 Level 3 credits at Distinction plus 21 Level 3 credits at Merit
• Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales: Accepted in place of one A level, or equivalent qualification
• BTEC Extended Diploma: DDM
• International Baccalaureate: 30 points overall, including 15 points from the best 3 HL subjects
• Scottish Highers and Advanced Highers: Considered on a case-by-case basis
• T levels: Merit overall
• GCSE requirements: No specific requirements, but overall GCSE profile considered
• English language requirements: IELTS score of 6.5 overall, with at least 5.5 in each component

Course Structure

• Year 1: Core modules include Explaining Criminology, Exploring the Criminal Justice System, Framing Social Issues, Making Sense of Justice (Discovery module), and Thinking Sociologically.
• Year 2: Core modules include Criminological Thought, Designing Sociological Research, Global Social Theory: Connecting Sociologies, and Research in Action: Methods for Investigating the Social World. Optional modules are also available.
• Year 3: Study abroad year at an international partner university.
• Year 4: Core modules include Advanced Sociological Theories and Applications, Prisons, Punishment and Society. Optional modules are also available.

Fees and Funding

• Home tuition fee: ｣9,790 (2026/27)
• International tuition fee: ｣25,490 (2026/27)
• Additional costs may include books, stationery, printing, and subsistence on trips and visits.
• College membership fee: ｣40 for undergraduates (2025)
• Computer equipment and internet access: Students are expected to have access to a computer and reliable internet.

Scholarships and Bursaries

• Lancaster Bursary: ｣1,000 in each year of study, based on household income
• Undergraduate Excellence Scholarship Home: ｣3,000 in the first year, based on entry grades
• International Undergraduate Excellence Scholarship: ｣3,000, as a tuition fee reduction, per year of study, based on entry grades
• Other scholarships and bursaries are available, including those for students from specific countries.
