PhD in Higher Education: Research, Evaluation and Enhancement

The PhD in Higher Education: Research, Evaluation and Enhancement is a comprehensive program designed to equip professionals with a deep understanding of higher education research, evaluation, and enhancement. The program has a modular structure, consisting of three core modules and three support modules, all of which are compulsory.

Part One

Part One of the program consists of five modules that offer guided study in key areas of Higher Education Research, Evaluation and Enhancement. The modules are:

• EDS845: Enhancing Higher Education: Policy and Change Processes
• EDS844: Evaluative Practice in Social Policy Domains: Higher Education
• EDS842: Enhancing Learning Teaching and Assessment at University
• EDS843: Researching Higher Education
• EDS841: Connecting Research and Practice (integrated into core modules)

Part One Compulsory Core Modules

The core modules involve researching and writing a publishable paper for an academic journal (7,000 words). The modules are designed to provide a theoretical foundation, enabling students to better understand issues in the management of change and become effective change agents in their professional settings.

EDS845: Enhancing Higher Education: Policy and Change Processes

This module introduces students to recent research, key theories, concepts, and critical perspectives about policy-making and change processes aimed at enhancing practices and outcomes in higher education.

EDS844: Evaluative Practice in Social Policy Domains: Higher Education

This module equips students with a comprehensive understanding of evaluative practices, applying approaches to higher education at individual program, institutional, and sector levels.

EDS842: Enhancing Learning Teaching and Assessment at University

This module improves students' critical appreciation of the way learning, teaching, and assessment in higher education are perceived, implemented, organized, and linked to policy and larger socio-cultural and political structures.

Part One Compulsory Support Modules

The support modules are designed to provide students with practical knowledge and skills to enhance their research and professional practice.

EDS843: Researching Higher Education

This module supports students in gaining insights into various research methods, producing both qualitative and quantitative data. It also helps students develop practical skills in carrying out a successful research project.

EDS841: Connecting Research and Practice

This module enhances students' ability to articulate and analyze aspects of their professional practice, connecting these to related research literature. It is integrated into all three core modules in Part One of the program.

Confirmation Process

Towards the end of Part One, students produce a PhD confirmation document containing a research plan for the PhD thesis (up to 5,000 words). This is assessed by a panel of academics to confirm progression to Part Two.

Part Two

In Part Two, students embark on an original research project, producing a 45,000-word thesis based on the research proposal developed in Part One. Ongoing guidance is provided by an experienced PhD supervisor.

EDS846: Writing and Defending a Thesis

This module is designed to keep students on track as they carry out their main research project, providing guidance on writing and defending their thesis. Resources are available for students' use, and the module provides opportunities for engagement with other students working in similar areas.

Assessment of the Thesis

The thesis is approximately 45,000 words and is assessed in the same way and against the same criteria as other Lancaster University PhDs. A viva voce (conducted via video conference if preferred) is held, with external and internal examiners appointed to examine each student's thesis.
