Program Overview

Medicine and Health Sciences

The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences has partnerships with numerous medical schools and faculties across Europe. Although the faculty does not offer an English programme, it has welcomed an increasing number of medical students in the past few years through the Erasmus+ programme for study, for clinical traineeships, or for a combination of both.

Exchange Students Medicine

The information provided will help prepare an exchange programme.

General Conditions for Taking Courses

  • Bilateral agreement: a valid inter-institutional Erasmus+ agreement between the home university and the University of Antwerp or between the faculty and the University of Antwerp's faculty is required.
  • Academic career: the student should at least be in their third year of medical studies at the moment of application.
  • Language skills: the student must have a good command of English, oral as well as written (min. level B2). Dutch language courses are recommended if the student wishes to take courses that are taught in Dutch.
  • Duration: one semester or a full academic year.

Study Programme

  • The faculty does not offer an English programme. Only a handful of courses of the Bachelor and Master programme are taught in English to accommodate international students ('green courses').
  • Besides these courses in English, the faculty also offers courses with facilities for exchange students ('yellow courses'). These courses are taught in Dutch, but the lecturers provide facilities in English.
  • The courses mainly consist of theory. Some courses comprise a limited amount of practice in the hospital or in the skills lab.

Mobility Programme

  • Erasmus Student Mobility for Studies (SMS).

Application Procedure

  • All general information regarding the application procedure for exchange students is available on the webpages of the International Relations Office.
  • A simplified scheme of the application procedure is provided for incoming medical students who wish to take courses as part of the Erasmus Study programme.
  • Attention: as per the guidelines of the Erasmus programme, only the new Digital Learning Agreements are accepted.

Deadlines

  • Nominations: 15 April (1st semester/full year) & 15 October (2nd semester)
  • Applications: 15 May (1st semester/full year) & 1 November (2nd semester)

I Want to Do Only a Clinical Traineeship

General Conditions

  • Academic career: the student should at least be in their fourth year of medical studies at the moment of application.
  • Language skills: the student must have a good command of English, oral as well as written, and a thorough knowledge of medical English (min. level B2). English supervision can be provided, but contact with patients will be in Dutch most of the time. A basic knowledge of Dutch is therefore highly recommended.
  • Duration: a clinical traineeship always lasts a minimum of 4 weeks and is full-time (3 ECTS). The maximum duration is 12 weeks, consisting of 4 weeks in 3 different departments/disciplines.

Mobility Programme

  • Erasmus Student Mobility for Placement (SMP) is preferred.
  • The faculty does accept students from non-partner universities, but priority is always given to students from Erasmus+ partners.

Application Procedure

  • All general information regarding the application procedure for exchange students is available on the webpages of the International Relations Office.
  • For Erasmus Student Mobility for Placement (SMP), the following documents should be sent in 1 PDF file: CV, motivation letter with clear indication of preferred disciplines and periods, and transcript of records.

Deadlines

  • Sending documents: 30 April (for traineeship during 1st semester/full year/2nd semester)
  • Applications: 15 May (for traineeship during 1st semester/full year/2nd semester)

I Want to Combine Courses with a Clinical Traineeship

General Conditions

  • Bilateral agreement: a valid inter-institutional Erasmus+ agreement between the home university and the University of Antwerp or between the faculty and the University of Antwerp's faculty is required.
  • Duration and timing: a clinical traineeship always lasts a minimum of 4 weeks and is full-time (3 ECTS; ca. 40 hours/week). It cannot overlap with theoretical courses. Only when there is a gap in the study programme is the student allowed to do the traineeship.

Mobility Programme

  • Erasmus Student Mobility for Studies (SMS).
