Program Overview

Bachelor in Biomedical Sciences

The Bachelor in Biomedical Sciences is a three-year full-time program that delves into the study of humans, first in health and then in disease, down to the molecular level.

Program Overview

  • The program consists of 180 study points and is taught in Dutch.
  • It is offered by the Faculty of Pharmaceutical, Biomedical, and Veterinary Sciences at the University of Antwerp.
  • The program takes place on the green Campus Drie Eiken.

Broad Basis

The bachelor's program starts with building a broad basis to understand how life works, down to the smallest details.

  • Besides basic sciences like physics, chemistry, and biology, students are introduced to biomedical components such as cell biology, histology, and anatomy in their first year.
  • The program explores the structure and function of the human body and the diseases it can contract from various medical disciplines.

Laboratory Work

Approximately one-third of the lessons are practical, including lab exercises.

  • These are the first steps in research, for example, into microbial infections, genetic disorders, and the influence of environmental factors on humans.
  • A team of scientists, doctors, veterinarians, and pharmacists guides the students.
  • The program starts with basic lab work, such as working with a microscope, setting up cell cultures, and isolating materials.

Internship and Thesis

Finally, students learn the necessary academic skills:

  • How to collect, process, and analyze scientific information.
  • How to report and present findings.
  • The bachelor's program concludes with a bachelor's thesis, for which students undertake an internship with a research group and write a thesis on a self-chosen topic.
    • The choice of topic can be aligned with the graduation orientation and the minor to be followed in the master's program.

Honours College

An extra challenge for the strongest students who want to dive deep into research immediately.

Prior Knowledge

A start-up test is available to assess prior knowledge.
