Program Overview
Postgraduate Program in Health Law and Healthcare Ethics
The postgraduate program in health law and healthcare ethics is a two-year program that is organized every two years. The program starts in even academic years, with the next cohort beginning in the upcoming academic year.
Program Structure
The program consists of seven modules, which together with the final thesis, form the complete program. The program can be taken full-time or part-time, with students able to choose whether to take all modules at once or spread them over two or more years.
- The minimum number of participants required for the program to run is 26, with a maximum of 40 participants.
- Each module consists of approximately five weeks of classes, with seven contact hours per week.
- Students are not required to take the entire postgraduate program, and can choose to take individual modules.
Teaching Methods
The lessons are prepared by the participants and are conducted in an interactive manner. Students can choose to write a paper on a assigned topic or take a final exam at the end of the academic year.
Program Objectives
Upon completing the postgraduate program, students are expected to have:
- A thorough knowledge of the foundations, structures, methodology, and systematics of health law and healthcare ethics, and the ability to apply this knowledge.
- Insight into the role of different actors in healthcare.
- A scientific attitude, with the ability to make connections between the knowledge presented in different modules and to find knowledge in scientific publications and databases.
- Continuous attention to the relationships between law and ethics.
- The ability to critically reflect on legal-ethical aspects of medicine.
- The ability to report and present orally in a clear and critical manner.
- An openness to international aspects of healthcare.
Faculty
Each module has its own module coordinator who closely follows the content and quality of the module. Some lessons are given by guest lecturers, whose rich professional experience is a significant added value to the program.
Attendance, Evaluation, and Certificate
- A minimum attendance of 50% is required to obtain the certificate. If a student has an attendance rate of less than 50%, they will not be allowed to participate in the final evaluation.
- Watching recorded lessons is not considered equivalent to attending classes.
- Legitimate absences (with proof) are considered equivalent to attending classes.
Evaluation
At the beginning of the academic year, students can choose between two evaluation methods:
- Writing a paper (minimum 5 pages) for each module taken.
- Taking a final exam in June, which evaluates the knowledge of each module taken. The final exam consists of a written and oral part.
Certificate
Students who complete all modules and write a final thesis will receive a certificate of "Postgraduate in Health Law and Healthcare Ethics" from the University of Antwerp. Students who take individual modules will receive an attestation for each module completed successfully.
Additional Activities
The program organizer, AHLEC, annually organizes several study activities that are open to participants of the postgraduate program. Participation in these activities is free for students of the postgraduate program.
